down the path of industrialization , or we can fight to turn around a neglected community into a family friendly environment . Activists have been fighting for some time to improve the way of life here , some losses and some hard fought and promising successes. All of this work will be for naught if Home Depot is allowed to open. -The increased traffic alone on our single four lane road through town will be disastrous. This street is already at its maximum capacity during certain hours, particulary at the same hours that Home Depot does its peak business. This is an unacceptable scenario. -The type of traffic Home Depot draws is industrial in nature, and their customers come from outside of the community. Home Depot wants to open this store here to serve customers in Montrose , La Canada, and La Cresenta, areas that may accept a Home Depot store as long as it is not in their upscale neighborhoods. -Home Depot is not trying to open this store to serve Sunland-Tujunga. -Home Depot has admitted that they expect 18 to 20 semi truck deliveries per day. This does not include their own deliveries that they make to customers with their own semi trucks. -The nearest freeway on ramp is over 1 mile away. This is not typical of most Home Depots, especially those few built in residential areas. -The proposed Home Depot is bordered on 3 sides by residential homes. - There is a public school (Apperson Elementary) one block away. - The proposed Home Depot will violate noise ordinances for a residential neighborhood. -The proposed Home Depot would take this community in a direction that conflicts with the Foothill Corridor Specific Plan. - The diesel truck traffic may violate AQMD standards. -The proposed Home Depot, with its' predatory pricing, will drive many of our Mom & Pop Hardware and In Home Services stores out of business. - This property is the only land this size available for a development that will meet the underserved general merchandise needs of the community. -Our residents currently have to drive 20 minutes to get to a general retail store. This puts a tremendous burden on our non driving seniors, and Moms with kids. -Our money is being spent in other cities because of the absence of a general merchandise development here. -The community has made it clear that Home Depot is not welcome here, and does not serve the needs of this community. |
